Malayalam is also known as Malayalam language and Kerala language. It is spoken by the people of the southern state of Kerala in India. The name "Malayalam" comes from the base word "malai" (mountain) and "aalum" (a tree). The language had its origin in Dharmapuri, a city on the west coast of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It was first written down during Sree Narayana Guru's mission to spread Islam among common people of Malabar (now Madras). Since his time, the language has evolved to become the official language of Kerala. The origin of the writing system of Malayalam is attributed to Sankaranarayanan who introduced it in Malabar during 1709. Malayalam script is one of the oldest known scripts in the world besides its ancestry. It contains thirty-two characters which are primarily syllabic, with some letters representing consonants and vowels. They are written from left-to-right (like English) but usage of consonants like "ദ" (dal) for "th" or names like "ച്ചു" (choodh) for "C" is peculiar to this script. A new version of Malayalam script was created by M. P. Sankaran Nampoothiri in 1833, after the re-organisation of Malayalam-speaking region on the basis of territorial basis. Each letter of the script represents a voiced or unvoiced consonant. If vowels are included, they are written above the consonants, while some consonants are combined to form conjunct letters which can be used to write Sanskrit words or phrases that do not have their own conjunct letters in the Tamil language. The Malayalam script has forty-three letters, of which the first four are the most important. Malayalam was traditionally written right-to-left but it is now generally written left-to-right. Malayalam has only developed a developed cursive script based on the Grantha alphabet, which is used for communication and writing poetry, for everyday communication between native speakers of Malayalam and also used by some non-native Malyali speakers since 1985. The Malayalam language had traditionally been written with Grantha letters however in modern times it has become more common to write in the Latin script. Most people who know how to read and write read and write with either Tamil or English as their second language. Malayalam is a rationalised version of the proto-language spoken in ancient Kerala, and some account it as belonging to the Dravidian family of languages. Malayalam has a rich literature in the form of poetry, stories and plays. The Konkani language has been used for some Malayalam works. Malayalam is classified as a "Southern Dravidian" language by Gonda who writes that it is closely related to Tamil In contrast both Tamil and Kannada are classified as "Northern Dravidian". Malayalam is one of the 22 scheduled languages of the Republic of India, with official language status in the state of Kerala. cfa1e77820
